Touring ski poles – best without straps!

Studies on the reduction of avalanche hazards also point to pole straps. Studies have shown that the touring pole with a basket functions like an anchor and people with hands in the straps were found buried deeper.

The use of touring poles without straps therefore definitely means a safety gain in ski touring, both on ascents and descents. Especially in passages with increased avalanche potential. It is also advisable not to use pole straps on forest descents. The basket can get easily stuck in the branches and injuries can happen. When using poles to accelerate or for pushing far behind the upper body, the strap is of course advantageous.
